POSTING INFORMATION Internal Title Artificial Intelligence Librarian Position Type Tenure-track School/Area College of Charleston Libraries Department Library Position Description The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Librarian at the College of Charleston plays a pivotal role in the Libraries' and College's strategic plans by providing innovative and engaging library instruction to support student success and the Libraries' role in the upcoming Intentional AI QEP. This librarian will collaborate and engage with faculty and staff colleagues across the Libraries and the College to develop and deliver credit-bearing, scheduled, and point of need instruction that empowers users to locate, evaluate, and ethically use information resources within the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Additionally, this position supports AI literacy, digital projects, and other emerging technology initiatives throughout the Libraries and the College. The AI Librarian is a tenure-track member of the library faculty. Position Breakdown by Percentage of Effort Instruction, 60%
  • Support the College's curricular goal of preparing students to become ethical and critically literate global citizens with AI proficiencies that include examining the appropriate and ethical use of AI.
  • Design, deliver, and assess credit-bearing courses and scheduled instruction sessions that are student-focused, guided by the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy, and incorporate reflective teaching practices.
  • Provide expert research assistance and point of need instruction to students, faculty, and staff through in-person consultations, virtual services, and outreach initiatives.
  • Participate in library-wide assessment activities to evaluate the effectiveness of library instruction programs and services.
Engagement, 30%
  • Collaborate with library and faculty colleagues and other campus partners to fulfill the College's Intentional AI QEP.
  • Integrate AI literacy, information literacy, metaliteracy concepts, and library resources into course curricula. Develop instructional materials, research guides, and online tutorials that support student learning objectives and promote lifelong learning skills.
  • Engage and lead in discussions and initiatives related to the ethical and effective use of AI in library services.
Professional Growth and Development and Professional Service, 10%
  • Undertakes research and/or professional development related to professional and scholarly interests.
  • Serves on library, College, and professional committees, elected and assigned.
Minimum Requirements
  • Graduate degree in Library & Information Science (M.L.S. or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Strong public service orientation with an aptitude for providing online and face to face information literacy instruction and research services in an academic library.
  • Interest in the intentional, ethical, and effective use of AI in instruction and in library services.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and instructional technology skills.
  • Commitment to professional development and the ability to meet the research, teaching, service, and professional competency requirements for tenure and promotion advancement.
  • Some evening and/or weekend work may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience providing academic instruction.
  • Experience evaluating, selecting, and implementing instructional technologies in an academic library setting as well as knowledge of current issues and trends in pedagogy.
