Description

To perform a variety of tasks to improve the aesthetics of the community by working proactively to help eliminate and deter blight within public rights of way, public property and private property. To include planning and executing cleanup operations and mitigating graffiti under the direction of the Police Department and in coordination with other resources within the City and other agency partners. This assignment will also assist with responding to general citizen concerns or issues within the community. Will be responsible for helping improve the overall appearance throughout the community through proactive blight abatement efforts, as well as supporting the department's overall maintenance needs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs semi-skilled and manual work in support of community maintenance and abatement activities.
  • Performs all work in accordance with department policies, procedures and standards of quality and safety.
  • Operates a variety of light to heavy equipment; sanitation equipment, maintains assigned tools and equipment.
  • Drives truck and other equipment; loads/unloads equipment, supplies and materials, etc.
  • Abatement of blight, garbage and other debris throughout public rights of way, public property and private property as established by Department.
  • Paint and repair City facilities as needed. Abatement of graffiti.
  • Interact with citizens regarding use of areas within public rights of way and public property.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: May include City trucks, vehicles, heavy equipment, various types of mowers and weed eaters, pneumatic/electric tools, various other hand and power tools, telephone, computer and/or laptop, mobile smartphone, etc. Hand tools, painting equipment, sanitation equipment and cleanup tools as needed. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to receive and give verbal communications, warnings, and commands. This position can be physically demanding at times, working in an outside environment, performing community cleanup, sanitation cleanup, debris removal, and graffiti eradication. Employee may be expected to operate hand tools, light machinery/equipment, and work with painting materials. Education, Experience & Licenses

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities can be considered qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience:

  • One (1) year experience related to manual labor or maintenance.
Knowledge of: Knowledge of principles and practices of department rules and regulations; methods, products, tools and equipment used in maintenance and abatement work; operation and care of specialized equipment and machinery used in assigned area of responsibility; City and Department policies, rules and regulations; and effective public relations skills. Ability to: Work resourcefully with a minimum of supervision; understand and carry out written and verbal instructions; understand and carry out procedures and techniques for dealing with the public in a tactful but firm manner; follow safety regulations; perform maintenance activities involving skills in the functional fields to which assigned; operate a variety of light to heavy power equipment; use and maintain tools and equipment properly; establish and maintain effective relationships with others. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.
